I can still remember the first walk in Plaza de Armas in Arequipa, the light and colours, the architectural beauty with the Misti in the background and the feeling I had arrived where I was meant to be. Travelling between the Andean villages of the Colca Canyon, crossing the Andes to reach Puno, meeting the indigenous populations that live on the Lake Titicaca Islands, entering the Machu Picchu citadel are unique experiences that bring unique sensations. And what about strolling through the local markets as seen in some well-known movies or discovering the Amazon Forest and the enthusiasm of the people? Travel to discover a different world, looking for new experiences and excitement. Accepting cultural differences and making an effort to understand them – this is the spirit to adopt in order to discover Peru. Sausages, pizza and beer are also available in Peru; but this is not the point of your trip. I am keen to write this short introduction because it is not always easy to accept cultural differences. I could in fact write a whole book full of this kind of anecdotes. Peru is a different country, it is not Europe and it is not the USA!
Peru had a glorious past at the time of the Inca, but has also lived through tragic times with social exploitation, terrorism, cultural repression and military dictatorships. Peru is a proud Country, its people are meek and happy, looking to the future; a Country that in the last ten years has embraced globalization and its challenges and in spite of its contradictions is becoming a forward-thinking country where traditions and modernity live side by side.
